Keynote at Day of Research: Digitalisation in Teaching
On 24.03.2021 the "Day of Research: Digitalisation in Teaching" took place, hosted by the HFT Stuttgart. Due to the online format of the event, there were participants from all over Germany as well as from other German-speaking countries. The event aimed to highlight the diverse possibilities of digitalisation in teaching and learning.
In keeping with the theme of the event, Professor Ulrik Schroeder took the audience on a journey from the first approaches for learning analytics to findings and experiences from former and current projects to future relevant topics in the field of learning research. In the keynote speech on learning analytics in research and practice, he gave an overview of the research field of learning analytics and at the same time present the approach currently being pursued at LuFgi9.
Abstract of the talk:
The increasing digitalisation of teaching and learning offers the opportunity to use data generated during learning to better understand learning and to optimise digital learning offers. The wide-ranging research field of learning analytics uses "big data" techniques for learning data to explore teaching and learning processes and to continuously improve teaching offers and learning strategies through appropriate feedback and also to create new ways of supporting learning.
Prof. Schroeder is one of the pioneers of German learning analytics research and its use in higher education contexts. In 2012, his research group developed the Learning Analytics Reference Model, which can be used to classify different types of learning analytics. As part of four dissertations, the first implementations of learning analytics were integrated into the learning platform of RWTH Aachen L²P as early as 2011 and evaluated with large learning groups. In current research projects, specific analytics are being developed to study learners in laboratories, in gamified environments and in virtual or augmented reality.
In addition to this presentation and second keynote, current research topics were presented and discussed in breakout sessions. In the session "Learning Analytics", which was led by Anke Pfeiffer, we participated with a contribution on standardisation and collaboration in research practices. We presented results from the projects DigiLab4U, MTLG, LeBiAC and the projects of our research lab LTI Lab, which gives insights into the development of sustainable LA structures beyond individual projects.
