SCOUT

The SCOUT project is investigating which content and methods can be used to sensitize students from the 5th grade onwards to the threats involved in using IT systems and to promote safe online behavior. Within the scope of the project, digital learning resources on the topic of IT security will be developed and evaluated with the target group. The results of the project will be made available as OER for use in student labs, schools and for teacher training. For the reseach within this project the research groups Learning Technologies and Computer Science Didactics and IT Security form a tandem within the graduate research training group NERD II (coordinated by the Ruhr-University Bochum), an initiative of the Ministry of Culture and Science of the State of North Rhine-Westphalia and the Project Sponsor Jülich.

The goal of SCOUT is to explore how digital learning resources can be used to enable students to learn and implement safe online behavior both in everyday life and in digital learning environments, thus strengthening their ability to use IT systems safely right from the start.

In addition to the relevant learning content and learning objectives, the digital learning resources developed in SCOUT should also include the didactical concept, the teaching/learning methodology and the media implementation for the target group and provide methodological support material for working teachers. They will be developed as Open Educational Resources (OER) and made available through various distribution channels: in the InfoSphere student laboratory of the RWTH's computer science department, directly on site in schools, or as digital learning resources that can be used both in class and independently from home. In this way, the resources are integrated into teacher training both at university and with partners in the field.

In order to introduce students to the topic of security at an early stage and to consolidate the content as general knowledge, SCOUT aims to target students in grades 5-6. In these classes, computer science will be introduced as a compulsory subject, starting in the school year 2021-2022.

To achieve this goal, SCOUT addresses and links two essential problems, thus combining the competencies of the tandem partners. On the one hand, the relevant and teachable basic knowledge necessary for safe online behavior will be specified and structured for the target group (focus: Prof. Meyer). On the other hand, the overall didactic concept must be developed with the participation of the target groups of students and teachers, the teaching and learning methodology for the individual offerings must be optimized, and an adequate media implementation must be designed and tested and evaluated together with the practice partners (focus: Prof. Schroeder). The practical implementation and evaluation of the developed resources bring the two thematic focuses together and are carried out jointly in tandem.
