Elearning research and elearning engineering is an interdisciplinary field involving competences from cognitive psychology, pedagogy, economy and computer science. The first part of the course will introduce learning theories and their implications to elearning content and system design. Instructional design theories, theories about motivation and principles for multimedia learning are the theoretical foundations for elearning content design and the elearning design process.

The second part of this lecture takes a look at new learning theories better suiting the new challenges for informal learning processes as they take place in life long learning utilizing social software and user generated content. The course will introduce emerging technologies for implementing systems and components for open and networked learning such as personal learning environments, in short PLE.

The assignments take the form of practical lab courses. The task will be to develop components for PLE utilizing emerging technologies and following a learner-centered approach.
