The project NOVA:ea (Innovation Cluster E-Assessments) aims to advance a wide range of e-assessment formats technologically, psychometrically, competence-oriented and diversity-friendly.

The joint project of RWTH Aachen University, FernUniversität in Hagen (FUH), Technische Hochschule Köln (THK) and the German Institute for Adult Education - Leibniz Center for Lifelong Learning (DIE). Is funded with 2.3 M€ as part of the 2020 Strengthening University Teaching through Digitization program of the Foundation Innovation in University Teaching.

At ist coreNOVA:ea aims to improve the structural, process and result quality of e-assessments. This will generate the following practical added values:

  • Creation of the best possible assessment conditions for all students, both in preparing for and completing exams.
  • Empirical consideration of student diversity for the didactic, technical and psychometric design/optimization of competence-oriented and diversity-appropriate e-assessments based on the e-examination systems Dynexite and ILIAS.
  • Student-friendly flexibilization of examinations through on-demand examinations, in which students can take an examination when their (among other things, data-based) assessed level of preparation promises a good examination result.
  • Identification and consideration of the determinants of acceptance of e-assessment adoption by instructors and students.
  • Further development of two widely used e-examination systems as open source for the implementation of flexible, competency-based and diversity-appropriate e-assessments.
  • Support of teachers by an ineractive examination cockpit as open source, which provides comprehensible recommendations for didactic development and iterative improvement of examinations on the base of assessment analytics results.
  • Development of an open access e-assessment toolkit that supports teachers and service institutions in the evidence-based development, implementation and optimization of competency-based and diversity-appropriate e-assessments in their fields.

Our share

Our project team from i9 identifies, advances, and develops tools for programming education and data analytics and integrates them into the existing e-exam infrastructure. The focus is on automatic program code evaluation and feedback generation for the programming language Python. The tools researched and developed in the project will be evaluated in the context of an introductory programming lecture for non-computer scientists. In addition, the development of suitable assessment analytics tools will make the behavior of students in the e-examination system usable in the form of an examination cockpit in compliance with data protection regulations.
